It seems that most of the high schools today offers computers to their students. I wonder if this actually helps the students, or if it tends to make them more alienated to school... My experience tells me that the students tends to check their private mail, play games, look at facebook and you tube, instead of actually doing the school work they shold do during class. Perhaps that is not the case at all schools, or in all classes.
The online platform used at this school was "HjÀrntorget", used by both students and teachers. Unfortunately the set up of the platform was not user friendly, and most students did not use ut, which led to teachers using other forms of communication - ex. Facebook.
I agree with Petronella. When we talks about computers we always focus on the good, I think it´s about time to have an open discussion about all of the negatives. Do you use computers on tests?
Computers where not used on tests during the time I did my VFU period. All were done individually on written papers which were handed in to the teacher.
Thanks for all your inputs! The idea of giving computers for all students is from the beginning good I think, as IT technology is such a big part of students' life and it also can beneficial in learning situations. But the problems is that they are not only used for educational purposes, and more often for personal and social reasons, as Petronella also commented. This is really frustrating I think, and teachers I met at my internship, tend to ignore this as "it's students' own responsibility to follow in class" etc. But why give students the opportunity?? Why can't the school have strict rules for internet usage in class, block social network webpages and games? "Computers for everyone" was really a problem at this school unfortunately...
Identify some of the problems. How much time should you spend on nagging , turn off the mobile, looking up from computer when the teacher have a review?
I do not think we can do away with the computers in the school, but I think they depletes important that the school have to think was when and how we use them and how we can get students to drop noise (private) and focus on what is important in class. The computer and the internet is a fantastic tool but not a teacher of flesh and blood who can ask the tough questions to the students and give them the reflection on their work.
And often when the students use them to search for information on the internet they do not know how to be selective or how to see what comes from an objective source and what is most to be considered as advertisement or propaganda....
